Despite Big Business’ Objections Consumers Will Now Have Access to a Vast Database of Unsafe Products

Despite significant opposition by GOP house members and lobbyists for the manufacturing industry, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) has successfully launched an online database that will allow the public to search for consumer complaints about the safety of everyday products.

This past Friday, the CPSC unveiled SaferProducts.gov which has made public previously undisclosed injury and death reports, as well as assorted hazard complaints. Despite the CPSC having these reports for years, the manufacturing industry had successfully kept such reports from the public, until recently.

Consumers will also have the option of filing their own complaints on the website for most types of defective products-with the exceptions of food, drugs, cosmetics, cars and guns.

Currently the website is considered live, however, consumers will not be able to search for other consumer reports until early April. All other website features are now in effect. Consumers can file defective product reports on the site, as well as search for various dangerous and defective product recalls.
